Problems on all development options (2, 3 and 4)

Let us start by looking at any issues that are present in all the development options:

1. Road layout - In all cases the road layout is left unchanged which means that:

(i) vehicles will pass between the store and the town centre on their way to the car parks serving the supermarket or the Visitor Centre.

(ii) Shoppers will therefore have to cross a busy road when walking from the supermarket to the town centre or vice versa.

(iii) The presence of this main road between the supermarket and the town centre means that the store is farther from the town centre than it needs to be.

2. Linked visits - The busy road and the distance of the supermarket from the town centre will make "linked trips", where shoppers visit both the supermarket and the town centre shops, less likely.

3. Backing onto the Estuaryside - All the proposals include a supermarket that is backing onto the estuary. Few Exmothians would want to see a supermarket positioned in this way.

4. Exeter Road traders - None of the plans encourage people to use the Exeter Road on their way to and from the supermarket.

The options proposed by EDDC and shown above are available explained in a small A5 booklet obtainable from EDDC. Unfortunately we believe that the booklet provides too little information and we are unhappy about the arguments used as positive or negative views of the options. (Click here for our comments). Once again we are uneasy about the form of the questionaire as there is no indication of how responses will be interpreted. We disapprove of the fact that respondents are invited to enter a first and second choice. Depending on how they are scored this arrangement could mean that some responses, for example "No change", are effectively cancelled out. Click here for our thoughts on how you should complete your response form.
